Navigators visit the New York City Department of Design and Construction.

Admissions

Navigate follows a cohort model, welcoming students in seventh grade and supporting them through college. We seek motivated Black and Latino students who aspire to attend one of NYC’s specialized high schools.

To be eligible, students must:

Have recent state assessment scores of at least 3. Demonstrate a minimum GPA of 85 in core subjects at the start of admissions

Our admissions process ensures that students and families are fully prepared to make the commitment needed to succeed in the program.

Admissions Process

Testing

On a student-by-student basis, Navigate staff assesses each child’s strengths and areas for growth using a practice Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT). This evaluation helps us determine how to best support the student’s academic journey.

Student Interview

Navigate is a rigorous program that requires dedication and commitment. As part of the admissions process, students participate in an interview to discuss their motivation for joining and their willingness to engage fully in the program.

Parent/Caregiver Interview

Parental support plays a crucial role in student success. We require a commitment from parents and caregivers to ensure their students can fully benefit from the program. This interview helps us align expectations and build a strong partnership with families.

Essay

Each student submits a short essay explaining their reasons for joining Navigate. The goal of this essay is not to evaluate writing skills but to help students reflect on their own motivations. When students face challenges, we use their own words as encouragement to help them stay focused and committed to their goals.
